Those of you who came to our fabulous Ice Cream Social in June will remember our discussion of the many car-free day trips available to seniors from Brookline (MA). One of the many exciting trips we discussed was taking the Amtrak Downeaster to Maine. It's since been pointed out to us by an intrepid senior that once you're at the Amtrak station in Portland, it's about 3 miles from the station to downtown. For this leg of your journey, you have several options.
Greater Portland Transit runs the #1 bus between the Amtrak station (i.e., the Portland Transportation Center) and downtown. The bus runs fairly frequently (about every 30 minutes) Monday through Saturday, early in the morning until late in the evening, and hourly for a shorter period on Sundays.
Seniors pay only $0.75 each way--half the full fare of $1.50. Just show your Medicare card or photo ID that includes your birth date.
To go from the station to downtown, catch the outbound bus toward Munjoy Hill. To return to the station, catch the inbound bus to the Portland Transportation Center (PTC).

Of course, you can also install a ride-hailing app like Lyft or Uber on your smartphone. They can even go with you on your first ride or two until you feel confident using the app on your own. Give us a call today!
